RE: Rear disk brakes...will 10.1 rotors work
I don't think you'd be able to pull it off. There is absolutly nothing
interchangable between the front and rear brakes. With all the custom
fabrication involved, you'd be better off starting with a custom race calipers
from somewhere like Willwood.
But even if you had a couple thousand dollars to spend, I still wouldn't do it.
Rear brakes that size would send you into a spin every time you touched them!
Dangerous.
Considering the weight of the car, there is NO NEED to increase the braking
ability on the rear of a 16v. Some people who race Sciroccos even say the stock
rear disks are overkill...they think drums are perfectly fine! Get some good
pads and stainless steel lines, and you're good to go. Slotted rotors aren't
even necessary, but I got them so who am I to say?
Even the front brakes are completely adequate on our cars, though I know a
couple people who have either gotten custom front brakes or gone to Corrado
11.0" brakes. I've got SS brake lines, Ferodo pads, and slotted (stock size)
rotors, and I get a kick of watching passengers peel their tonsils off the
windshield. I autocross regularly and have NEVER felt these brakes fade. YMMV.
You gotta remember, the 16v already came with significantly bigger/better brakes
than any other Volkswagen at the time. They're quite up to the task, even on a
race course. Now, if you were driving an early 8v with non-vented, 9.4" rotors
in front, it'd be a different story!

Subject: Rear disk brakes...will 10.1 rotors work
I want to put 10.1 rotors on the back of my 86 scirocco 16V.
Problems
I dont see a screw holding the rotor on, like in the front and also would
the same unsealed bearings work or would they have to be changed.
At a local junk yard I can get the 10.1 inch calipers and carries for 50
each side and I have some good rotors already so the cost of replacing the
rear brakes would about the same.
I thought I read something about some one doing this but I can't remember.
Is it possible and if so what am I forgetting.
Thanks
Robert
