I just redid my sunroof upholstery last week and I
think I was experiencing the same thing as you (before
I got it together right! :P)
My problem was that I had wrongly installed the two
pieces at each end of the trim rod (that goes left to
right, just above the trim panel). There are little
tabs on the outside of these pieces, they fit into the
slots that are on the underside of the sunroof.
It's too hard to explain, but if you have the
Cabby/Scirocco Bentley ('85 - '93), look at page 12-32
figure 7-6. The slot above the guide pin (with arrow
1 pointing at it) is where these tabs should fit.
