MK2 Motor Mount Help

I finally got around to actually turning a wrench on my '87.  I started with
the drivers side motor mount and immediately got stuck.  I can't get one of
the bolts that runs through the top of the transmission case out.  It won't
clear the frame (too long).  I removed the front mount, but it got late and
I quit.  Will I be able to drop the transmission low enough if I remove the
rear mount?  Anything else I need to worry about?
