Heh, I have the big lower bracket powdercoated too, but I think its getting 
a decent enough ground for me to see some voltage on the field.

I pulled it out, the brushes looked kind of short, I don't really know what 
to look for.  I want to swap another one out for it, would a voltage 
regulator from an 8v work?  I have one I could try.
When the car was running we put an ammeter on the main alternator wire and 
got little or no current.
