Re: Oil/AF in strut housing [was Re: Koni Sport Adjustables]
Uh..., the only part of the strut outside of the housing is the rod and it
contains nothing but good old steel! Unfortunately, Bilstein is no different
than any other shock in this regard. (Yes! I've owned and installed them!)
Every shock, on a bad enough road, will generate a lot of heat and it's
better to improve your heat transfer by adding oil or antifreeze around the
insert. There is NO downside to doing this.

On Bilstein inserts, you don't need any fluid in the strut housing. The
Bilstein inserts are designed with the working fluid and piston in the upper
half of the unit. This is the part that is mostly outside the strut housing.
Due to this design, there is no need to use a cooling medium for heat
transfer in the strut itself. It also reduces unsprung weight. A real cool
design. Bilstein's ROCC!(pun intended) Check out:

I was mulling over this same thing for my Bilstein sports and heard both
oil and antifreeze suggested for filling the strut housing, but the gruff
sounding tech guy at Bilstein said not to use anything so I didn't. Hope I
wasn't misinformed. That said, I think the original housing did contain a
liquid although I can't remember if it was oily or aqueous. Can anyone
point to a written document to settle this definitively so it can go into
our FAQ? benton----
