If you need a new one be sure to go with one of our proven list vendors
(read: Don't buy at the DEALER). 

Things may not be as bad as you think and a new one will last how many
hundreds of miles?

More direct to your question, other than the question about differing
fuel delivery systems (motronic, CIS) you should be OK if the thing
isn't turbo'ed or anything too wild like that.

For my own wondering I ponder why VW went with the whole transfer pump dealey-o.
