The number of bolts is VERY relevant when you're only buying an impeller
half - it's pretty hard to bolt a 7 bolt impeller housing to an 8 bolt
pump housing. If you buy a complete pump (like they sell at the dealer!)
then you only have to worry about hub size (as stated, non an issue for
post 81 cars unless someone has swapped in an earlier engine/water pump)
and outlet diameter for the coolant pipe connection (you can stretch the
A1 hose to fit the A2 pump outlet, for example.)

I have never heard that question of 8 or 9 bolts. I used to work at a vw
parts place too, and it never came up. weird...
