You don't have to go that far, since the Rabbits up to '78 or so were German made.  My niece drives a '78 Rabbit with about 250k miles on it.  Looks like crap, but still doesn't use a quart of oil between changes.  Meanwhile, I have a Westmoreland Rabbit out back gathering rust. Bought it as a parts car with only 60k on it! (no, It wasn't wrecked, just not worth driving!)
