[Tech] Rev limiter?

This weekend I was goofing around in the roc (84 8v with some mods (GTI
T-body/Hydro Head/Header)) and apparently had the engine bouncing off
the rev limiter (I think). It seemed like this was happening right
under 6000 rpm, maybe 5800...even though the tach shows the redline
considerably above 6000.

So,
A: what actually happens to cut the revs...is it fuel or spark
controlled?

B: what should the redline be...is it possible that the tach is
miscalibrated? or is the rev limiter miscalibrated. 

C: If its not a rev limiter causing the car to jolt at high rpms, does
it seem like this is a syptom of some other problem i.e. could it be
lack of fuel pressure/delivery?

A pretty quick search through Bentley last night for "rev limiter"
turned up nothing.
