I think the expansion valve is that thing in the
passenger footwell that is at the juncture of a Freon tube coming from the
engine bay and one heading for the evaporator (or the condenser, whichever one's
in the center console). It has a disc-shaped structure mounted
horizontally on top, and is attached to a length of wire (or really narrow gauge
tubing) that ends in a temperature probe that's friction-inserted into what I
presume is a place where the air temperature is measured.
It should come off pretty easy, and the replacement
should be straightforward as well; the trick will be to draw down a vacuum after
re-sealing the system and before recharging it.
I bought one of those venturi vacuum pumps that you
attach to a compressor, and it handled the "vacuuming" just fine.
