Replacing the shifter bushings should fix most of this. Then replacing
the plastic shifter links as well as the other little parts will help
too. The little ball and socket thing tends to wear a flat spot.
Sometimes just flipping it over will give you a little more life out of
the part. Otherwise replace it. Potterman has (had?) a shifter kit that
came with everything to make your shifter like new. (Check his web page.

The mushiness can be directly attributed to the missing/torn/broken
shifter bushings. The extended throw is probably part bushings and the
little ball and socket part that mounts to the steering rack.
