My 86 did something similar.  Strangest thing.  I thought maybe the electric 
part of the ignition switch had worn out, so, I replaced it.  Still did the 
same thing.  Turns out that the aluminum peg that sticks out of the lock part 
of the switch had twisted just enough that it wouldn't throw the switch all 
the time.  It worked for a while if I wiggled the key, but, after a few weeks 
it didn't work at all.
