The Jetta Wagon is supposed to be available soon. Maybe there's your
middle-ground. How about a Pass-me-not that is a couple years old? Audi
quattro wagon? Quantum (or even better: QSW)?

Otherwise, I'd of course have to recommend an '02 Impreza WRX sport-wagon!
Or at least the 2.5 wagon, which should be right about $20k. If 20k is still
too steep, you can get pretty damn good deals on an older Legacy or Impreza
wagon. You should be able to find an AWD '95 Impreza wagon for well under
10k. You can get them with a 2.2L, which isn't entirely gutless. The
interior isn't quite VW quality, but they're fun and run FOREVER...

Other "cool wagon" options:
Volvo 850 (better: R/T5/T5R)
Saab (various used)
