Stay away from automatics.  Even the Tiptronic has its issues.  I don't
know how common it is, but my wife's cousin bought a new automatic 1.8T
Passat in 2000 and had a bad experience.  The dealer ended up buying it
back recently due to the transmission linkage failing 3 times amongst
other problems.  The brake failure was the final straw.  :-)  They are
for the most part great cars, but all I can recommend is go with the 5
speed.  VW automatics have always had their problems.
