Chris,
There were two types of CV joints.
Some were held on by the outside clip you found, and others were held on by
a sliding over a metal o-ring.
Most kits come will parts for both types of joints.

If you can pop the joint off the axle with a BFH than you don't need it
(depending on the size of the hammer that is :D )

If you have to bang on it and bang on it and it won't pop off, start looking
for that circlip.

I've seen both types on the same year Scirocco (1981).
Maybe this is an 81 thing or something.
David's 81 had the circlip type and my 81 Mars had the metal o-ring type.

Oh yeah that reminds me of another thing that is odd about the 81 Scirocco.
On some 81's the radiator is held to the rad support by a center metal
C-clip (also attached to the fan shroud) and on other 81's it is held in by
hooks on the ends of the radiator connected to the rad support.
Mars and Cosmos both have their radiators mounted to the rad support
differently like described above.........Go figure!
VW never ceases to amaze and confuse me.
