about the exhaust leak theory...

apparently, there was a crack in the downpipe, but before the car was handed over to us, teh previous owner replaced it, and it looks brand new.  The cap is still on the CO2 tap, and teh distributor is fine.  There is a small leak where the cat meets the intermediate pipe, but it is a small leak, and doesnt add a lot of noise.  My theory is that (a) the thermotime switch is faulty, and spratically send a signal to teh CSV and that (b) the idle mixture is running too rich, and the engine wont start unless the mixture is up this high.
