I am not sure what you mean by editorial comment about teh shift linkage, 
but I meant that if the shifter is moving around fine into
each gear position (in the car ) it is possible that one of teh linkage has 
come off the position and therefore no actual gears are selected
and the car though you push it in first, remains into neutral.
