Chris,

On the 97 Golf 2.0 I tore apart, the computer was in the rain tray, in the
very center and rather hidden.  

Word of caution: 96 and newer A3s have a different version of Motoronic, I
would stick with finding a 95 or older, as who knows if the newer box will
work on the older wiring/injection.
