thermostat question

Okay, I warned you about stupid cooling questions. I finally decided to
install the new "low temperature" thermostat I have had on the table for a
month, and I did the "put it in a pot of hot water" test to discover that it
opens at 87*C, despite the stamp which says 80*C. 87* is the reading which is
"normal" according to the Bentley. The reason for changing it was to help
lower engine temp (fan switch has been changed already and I realize that it
will have a bigger impact once the engine is hot anyway)

So what I'd like to know is, what is the point of even installing this
thermostat. I suspect the one that is in there may open at the same temp
anyway. Since the car's heater will never be used much ( winter parked,
spoiled thing) should I just go ahead and order the 71* version from TT or not
bother changing it at all? The oil temp is typically 100* +/- 5*, temp guage
needle just below the red light, so the car is not running that warm. But
sitting at the track is another story, and that is the concern.

Let me know what you think, leave it alone, install this 80* one or order the
TT 71* one, and thanks
