8V vs 16V ignition computers

My car runs great now that I've installed the 8V box.  I had to retard the
timing about 20 degrees when I installed it, compared to the 16V box. I've
got a funky new advance timing light so I can check these things.  I'm
getting about 35 degrees full advance on both boxes but the 16V one barely
runs under 3000 rpm.  I'd like to run the higher rev limiter, especially if
I get the euro intake cam.   Is there an extra wire/ connection I'm missing?
I know the coils are slightly different in primary and secondary resistance,
but could that be the cause of the problems?
