asheville 2k+1.5 (rieger gets more hp, free of charge)



    So since Eric got the 16v keys in, and rons mount brackets showed up, i figured i'd make the 4
hour drive up to Eric (Ellis) place this weekend. There was a huge turnout, i think at one point
there was 7 or 8 sciroccos there, all in Erics driveway/workspace. Alan Hoglen was taking yet more
stuff out of his engine bay (A/C), and fixing a water pump. Chris Jevens was puting his rocco back
together after ripping the head half apart/chasing engine gremlins (and it worked pretty good
afterwards from what i understand). As for me, i was a tad busy. With seemingly endless help (and
Erics endless supply of tools), the Rieger got new mounts (driver/passenger), belts, tensioner, cam
seal, crank seal, intmd shaft seal, and about 35+ hp (!!!). How could that stuff give me 35+ hp???
Before disassembly, we lined up the cam/crank to tdc to ease reassembly. With the cam at 0, the
crank was at what would be the 12 degree mark. This means i've been driving around for 4 months with
cam timing 12 degrees retarded (thats 2 teeth, for those interested). Mark off one more gremlin
inherited from Ryan. Once everything was put back together, i go for a drive and realize the real
gain of a full tt exhaust and shrick 256's. my god. until now it seemed to drive like any other
scirocco, only a little weaker due to the wider tranny (so i thought). let me tell you, the tranny
is no longer in the way. the powerband now has a distinct peak and wants much more to throw me into
the back seat (not back into the seat, into the back seat!), and the engine past the front bumper.
oh, i finally degreased the tranny label plate enough to read the code on it. its a "FN", for those
interested.

    as you can see, its wide as hell, with one of the tallest 5th (after final drive) ratios. i
think i need to get one of my spare stock 16v trannys and send it to one of those tranny rebuilder
gurus for a 6th gear conversion and that stud bolt fix thing. i better send it out now so i can get
it back sometime in 2003 (heheh).
    on the drive back from Erics, the engine vibration was now gone, so i was able to tell where my
shutter was coming from. it only does it under acceleration. let off the gas, shutter is gone. looks
like im changing half shafts before this weekend (waterfest).
    I must say, everyone i have met with a scirocco has been incredibly nice. The guys up there in
asheville only reinforce that. You guys are great! Thanks for all the help/parts.
well, enough babblin for now, im off to contact that guy on ebay that is sellin me a motronic
conversion.
