I sourced this from the Mazda 323GTX list:
"The output of the O2 sensor can only be measured with a good quality 
digital meter. Analog and cheap digital meters load down the sensor 
output forcing the voltage to 0 volts. Basically all O2 sensors are 
the same and interchangable. The newest ones (3 and 4 wire) have 
built-in heaters which gets them up to operating temperature faster 
after starting, which gets the ECU into closed-loop operation faster, 
which reduces emissions faster than waiting for the exhaust to heat 
it to temp. Other than that, they're all the same. (there are 
wide-range precision calibrated ones for emissions and performance 
testing, but these are not used in engine management systems.)"
