how to tell ABA & 3A apart?

so, I am trying to get this guy to determine if this engine he has for sale 
is an ABA or a 3A. if the code starts with ABA, it is, of course, an 
ABA...(duh) but what about the 3A? will the code start with 3A or something 
else. the guy said he "thinks" it is an engine code 5J. what is that? thanks
