RE: Stripped out engine mount stud..AGAIN
I'll guess the smaller nut is the reason it stripped the second time. Less
shear area means higher stress in the existing threads and all that
engineering stuff...
The studs are not removeable. My threads are bad (but my little 1.7 is a
bit easier on them than your 16V), and when I replace my rear mount (soon, I
hope), I plan to just remove the studs with my angle grinder after noting
their locations relative to something else under there and drill holes to
drop bolts in from the top (M10, I believe, although you could go larger
than stock if you are paranoid, but I have concerns this could weaken the
front attachment point). I wouldn't worry about it because unless it's
already damaged, it shouldn't strip off under acceleration if you use good
fasteners. I would recommend going with class 10.9 fasteners (metric
equivalent of grade 8).
You will definitely not be able to remove it with vise grips - it is
permanently attached to a stamping welded to the body (front mounting point)
and a flat plate welded to the underside of the floor (rear mounting point).
If you go the drill-and-bolt route, LMK how it goes. You'll probably get
around to it before I do.
