RE: Importing a car for "Show or Display"

<snip Ken>
                Apparently they have a couple of criteria, such as, the
manufacturer can not have sold another version of the car here, ie. no
importing a euro 1987 Scirocco since VW sold a Scirocco here. The Lupo
passes on that case.
             There also has to be a case made that the car is unique
enough to warrant special dispensation. Not sure how many thousand
Lupo's they are selling in Europe, but it might be tough to prove that it
is unique!!!
          The problem that is not addressed by the "Show or Display" is
the EPA. They still want the cars to meet the emmission standards for
the time of manufacture. Thus, a new car would have to be OBDII
compliant. If it doesn't have OBDII, don't even bother trying.
<end snip>

I just finished reading this article. You won't be able to get the Lupo in
by this method. The reason is another caveat to the "Show or Display" law
is that the vehicle can't be in production. If it is, the manufacturer is
the only one with the right to try to get it on these shores. Besides,
there's a mileage limitation of 2500 per year. Also, IIRC from the article
a few months back, there were stipulations on storage and there could be
surprise inspections.

If you want a ballsy small car, wait for the Subaru WRX this year (Donning
asbestos suit... ready for the flames).
