RE: Prep (on a budget) Q's
-Recommendations: Basic stuff like K&N air filter, Bosch/Mann oil filter,
quality oil, bleed brakes with DOT-4 fluid, Ferodo or similar brake
pads/shoes. Get an upper strut tower bar (Scirocco's flex a lot up there,
and it could lead to chassis cracks) and a 28mm rear torsion bar to get rid
of that understeer. A lot of people don't realize it, but tires are more
important than any suspension setup. Get R-Compounds if your class allows
and if you're serious. Otherwise, get some good performance street tires. I
run Yokohama A-520's and like them a lot.
-IMHO, there's only one way to go with springs (other than coil-overs): H&R.
Should run you somewhere around $170. Get some Boge shocks if you're on a
budget, Bilstein or Koni if you can afford them.
-Techtonics front motor mount combined with VW motorsport rear mount (or was
that vice-versa...hmm?). Both are heavy-duty rubber, and a very inexpensive
and worthwhile modification. They will cause your dash to rattle a little. I
would definitely NOT use Polyurethane mounts if you're interested in a
comfortable street ride. No matter what you do, make sure the passenger side
mount is recent/good FIRST.
-Look for a good used steering wheel. I got my Momo Monte Carlo for ~$100
with the adaptor.
-Look for Scirocco 16v seats. Very good side bolsters, sit lower than any
others you can find, and are easier to find than Corrado seats. Also
consider the real Recaros from an A2 GTI/GLI for the best side bolsters VW
ever shipped to the States.
Have fun, and good luck!
