Is it an 8V?  If so, I was having a problem with leaking from the back of
the engine when I swapped the head on ma 84 rocco.  I replaced the cork
valve cover gasket with a rubber one and voila, no more leaks.  WRT the
smoke, a compression test is definitely the first place to commence. HTH
