RE: Bilstein Shocks [add-on question]
From: "Daniel Snow" <res00v06@gte.net>
How can tell when they're shot, is it a subtle handling difference that will
all of a sudden break one day, can I visually inspect them somehow?
I ask because my 'Rocco was lowered before I bought her and I have no
earthly idea if anything was done 'correctly' as per everyone's suggestions
on this subject.
Please offer guidance.....I am a willing study.
Thanx,
Dan
You can look for cracks in the rubber that surrounds the bushing. The front
control arm bushings are mostly hidden in the frame. When they go out, you
will have clunky sounds on uneven roads and play in the steering. The
bushings are cheap, they get coated with oil and the oil breaks down the
rubber. If you guesstimate that the bushings have more than 100,000 miles
on them, then it's probably in your best interest to change them.
Especially while you have your suspension apart.
There are lots of ways for a PO to have incorrectly modified your car. You
are probably the best judge of the PO's maintenance record. If (s)he did
things half-assed, then probably the original job wasn't done right.
