I'm on an audi list; similar situation in that one person has been footing the bill.  To help defray some costs, one list member had a thousand or so self-adhesive stickers made up (just vinyl that sticks to the inside of the window) with the site address.  Cost probably $50??.
A list member volunteered to handle funds, and sells them for a couple bucks each, with proceeds to the list owner.  The site also has links to paypall so people could send in donations.  It's low key; give if you want, or don't.  The $ don't ever entirely pay for the list/equipment etc., so it's not an "income".
