If you
don't do silly things like worry about paint and interiors you can get under
13sec with under 5k.
I know
of a complete BAE system that you can buy for just over $1000 with all the parts
you would need except an intercooler.
There
are lots of decent if not new 8v turbo manifolds available for under $400 and a
good used turbo can be had for $250 or less. From there you
get the 8v.com downpipe and paste in a used 2.25 inch 16v exhaust. You
will need an intercooler so plan on dropping $100 or so for a used Mistu Starion
or Saab model and fabricating the tubing from mandrel bent pipe from any
American Muscle shop. You'll spend another $150 or so for custom
fitting/welding of the tubes. There are at least $500 in little items that
you need, turbo oil pan, oil inlet and drain lines for the turbo, ARP
headstuds.........and so on.
I'd
also recommend getting an Audi 2.0 block to drop in...about $450-$600 depending
on mileage and location. That way your start with a nice 115HP 2.0 liter
motor. You can reduce the compression with a copper shim $100 in between
two stock metal ABA gaskets.
For a
13sec car, a great clutch is mandatory so hook up a 16v Pressure Plate and plunk
down the $200+ for a sach sport clutch or equivalent. Got to www.bsiracing.com for some good clutch
deals.
The
most important thing to get right is the fuel. Your 87 has standard cis
injection so you gotta get an additional injector controller from a shop like
SDS or Perfect Choice Motorsports.
You
would have to run high boost, probably 15lbs or more to really go like
hell. I have only touched on a few things here but your dream can
definetely be achieved. We are working on a 16 turbo and a 8v right now,
both cars are about halfway done. The 8v has less than $2500 in is to far
and the 16v is around 4k.
