yikes. this thread is more confusing than it needs to be.

1) your shifter linkage is out of whack. it's adjusted by loosening a bolt 
and moving stuff around. more specific instructions should be in the bentley 
you have.

2) your bushings, if original, are also likely worn. they'll make your 
shifter feel loose if bad; they shouldn't cause the problems you're 
describing (maybe if a couple of them are disintegrated or something). good 
idea to replace them anyway. it's a 30 min job at most.

3) most people on the list get their parts from mike at www.parts4vws.com or 
mark at www.germanautoparts.com .  don't buy stuff from the dealer. they 
suck.
