Next level past Mk1 'S' = GTX?

I am contemplating a GTX badge for the back of my 81 (which didn't
start life as an S model but became one later). Since it will be
'performanced' up beyond the styling cues of a natural S model and
will contain a bit of Experimental mods and since GTI pertains to
Rabbit/Golf shells (note GLI = Jetta, etc.) I was hoping to get some
consensus, historical perspective on this.
