RE: finding idle
Unsure hoe related the Fi on the 78 is to the MKII FI system, but mine did
something like yours, idled at high >1400RPM, died and hard to restart
<1400RPM.
I ended taking the fuel assembly off and cleaned/polished the plunger which
has some scrapes on the side and was "sticking" perhaps your having a
similar problem?
Here is the direct link of what IO am talking about. the system might be
different but perhaps closely related that you could check it out.

When the car tried to die I found the FI to be "noisy" (as in additional
vibration from unit) that is what made me look into it...
It has been running smoothly ever since.
Hope it may help you out.

Subject: finding idle
For background I have a 1978 fuel injected scirocco bone stock that has had
afuel problem for several months now.
It finally got to the point where it would only fire and die and never run.
Before that it would act, when cold, like it was starving for gas, then
suddenly begin running right.
When hot,it was always a crap shoot whether it would crank back up.
We have replaced the distributer, fuel pressure regulator at thefront of the
engine, all injector seals, the valve at the fuel pump and other niggling
things.
We now have it so it fires first time and runs, runs well, plentyof power,
150
across all four on a compression test, but after five to then, sometimes 15,
the thing decides it doesn't want to run anymore and dies.
It will then refuse to run unless the idle is set above 1500.
Any suggestions, ideas, solutions.
I'm ready to go with a carb, but my mechanic feels he can find the problem.
We are also pretty sure there is no air leak in the system.
Once we solve this problem, we think we will have the whole fuel problem
licked.
Thanks
