I was having this same problem with my '86 16v.  It would run fine once
started, but was a bitch to start.  Lots of cranking, usually to the point
that it just about killed the battery, and then it would catch.  I got so
fed up, I actually took the car to a mechanic.  Turned out it was the
ignition module itself.  My mechanic sourced a used one for $40 versus the
$120 for a new one.  I don't know how easy or hard it is to install one of
these things (I didn't put it in), but we're talking one 7-pin electrical
plug and two screws, so it can't be too bad.  Part number is 211-905-351-D
(at least it was in '86).
