Seems you are both looking at it from a different perspective and with
different goals.

The wide wheel, narrow tire thing is for looks not performance. For those
that do it, it looks cool and they like it.
I also like the wide rim lip look but would do it with fender flares and
matching tires, just my taste.

Personally I am both a slave to performance and looks, in that order, so I
would try to match the correct tire size to the rim. (even if that means
getting a narrower wheel). But that's just me.

Point is some people like to mod their car one way and others another. No
one is wrong, just different....I kinda like the variety. :D
