Generic hood lifts?

Whilst at Treffen I saw a bunch of cars with hood lifts, and I'd love to
have some but I don't want to spend boo-koo bucks on a set of Bonraths.
So, would I be able to head to the local parts place, get some short
hatch struts, head to Ace Hardware, get some threaded ball joints and
make a set myself?
Anyone done this?
