A/C retrofit - quick Q

Hey Roccer's,
    I'm all out of R-12.  I got the retrofit kit from Wal-Mart for $33.95
(autoparts stores want about $50 for it).  My understanding is that I should
hook up a vacuum to the system to pull out any moisture, air, residual R-12,
etc.  How much vacuum should I pull?  If I do pull a vacuum on it, will the
fittings still close, or will I loose the vacuum as soon as I disconnect the
pump?  If that's what happens, how do I get around it?
