I have a local friend with a 2.0 16V in a 75 that did this.
He cut the manifold right after the runners wher the box part of the plenum
starts (where flat top plate that says DOHC starts).
I believe he used a ban-saw to cut it with the manifold in a jig to keep
things perfectly straight.
He did the same with a stock Scirocco manifold.
Welded them together, grinded down the welds and you would be hard pressed
to tell it wasn't the real thing.
I am going to see him tomorrow, I'll take some pic's for ya.
