Thermo Closed: Coolant (hot or otherwise) flows through bypass pipe to
head and back. Includes heater core.
Thermo Open: Coolant still travels through bypass pipe, also travels
through radiator.
If the thermo is open them increased cooling is going to take place (at
least it's designed that way) If you have a super large rad and a low
temp thermo and maybe an oil cooler you will keep the motor from getting
up to a good operating temp. As soon as the thermo starts to open it
will begin dumping cold (cooler) liquid into the block/head.
Thermostatic switch controlling the fans can have a sim effect; comes on
too low, too often cools too much.
Better to have a large capacity to cool but have it staged in a way to
only have the medium to full cooling happening on as needed basis.
- Bypass pipe. (minimal, initial)
- Thermostat near water pump. (nominal, normal)
- Electric rad fan. (Maximum, as needed).
See?, stages of cooling.
