Non rocco VW CD changer

Does VW make one CD changer compatible with all VW's with CD changer control. 
 I am thinking of buying a CD changer from someone from a New Beattle for my 
98 jetta. Can someone with etka check to see if the part # are the same.  He 
says it will work in any Jetta/Golf/Beatle from 1993-current. I am skeptical.
