Some of the newer NOS systems are quite safe. There are a couple ways to
keep it from self destructing which also will make the NOS bottle last
longer. 
First, use a sequential system. NOS is added gradually via throttle
position and RPM. 
Then there is the system that wont inject NOS until you hit a certain
preset RPM and WOT.
Using a WOT switch is key to having a safe system. If you have a bad
valve burp up a backfire under WOT, you've already got bigger problems
than the hiccup.
