Your helper should not have pressed the pedal to the firewall, esp on
older cars with dirty fluid.
It has been explained to me that normal pedal travel keeps the bore
clean but there is corrosion and much in the part of the cylinder that
gets scraped off when excessive pedal travel is performed.
I replaced the front rotors on my buddies Jetta and he pressed the pedal
with gusto and held it there w/ force.
Same trouble you reported and we ended up replacing the M/C.
Good luck, hope it's not too bad but prepare for the worst.
