I'll second that.  I bought an '80 Rabbit as a parts car for an '80 Scirocco that I once owned.  Body and interior parts are, of course, not the same, but I eventually swapped the radiator, engine, transaxle, axles, some fuel system parts, etc. without any problems.  I did not find even ONE part that looked that same but didn't work.

The antifreeze helps prevent corrosion caused by the mix of iron and aluminum parts in the engine, so its a good idea to run it all year.  Water transfers heat better than antifreeze (so running water for racing is probably the right thing to do).  The more antifreeze in the mix, the less effective the cooling system is, so never run straight antifreeze.
