Turbo="easy"? (long)
Neal, I agree with your sentiments entirely. I've been tuning my own factory
turbo Mazda for almost a year now. The results are absolutely fantastic, but
the margin of error that I am used to working with on the all-motor VWs just
does not exist. Every decision, tweek, and mod becomes all the more critical
and demanding. This is not to say that it isn't worth the trouble. -hell no!
However, the potential for trouble grows at the same exponential rate that
the power does.
With that said, I slightly contemplating the addition of a turbo to my
Scirocco. I'm feeling very guilty about my Mazda being the fastest car in my
stable. It just shouldn't be. Thankfully, the Hardcore VW guys are there to
show us how to put these projects together.
The forum owner (Justin a.k.a. "RedRotors") manufactures his own 16v turbo
exhaust manifolds. These are a lot cheaper than anything else on the market.
Junkyard turbos can be had for next to nothing. Intercoolers can be sourced
from a variety of junkyard cars. Stuff like blow off valves, boost and
exhaust gas temperature guages, can be easily found on eBay...
The two critical parts of the puzzle that I recognize are compression ratio
and engine management. I'm not about to stack headgaskets to lower the CR.
It is the cheap but dirty way, is not particularly reliable, and compromises
the power in favor of convenience. Nah, If I was to do it, I'd go in there
with some custom forged pistons. This is hugely expensive up front, but then
you can kick back, relax, and not walk on engine-tuning eggshells.
Secondly, I'd install a programmable engine management system. Forget the
oldskool microfuelers and all that stuff. CIS has had it's day. Its over.
Motronic is lame because it's still like CIS with a restrictive AFM.
Digifant eliminates this but it is inflexible in the long run. Its all about
the SDS or TEC-II in my book.
Have checkbook ready and buckle in tight...
