Twin Engines... Who What When Why?

I have heard, and seen one picture, of the "Twin Engine" Scirocco project.  
Cool...  I was just wondering when this was done, by whom, and what the 
results were.  Were there any of these cars sold to the public, or was it 
just a VW thing?  I don't ever want to try this on a Rocco... but what about 
a Bunny Truck?  Ideas.. so "what are you hoping to get out of...."
