You have a couple of options on the lights.

1. (do this first) Relay them.  Even with the US DOT beam pattern, you will 
get a lot more light.  There is a tech procedure on http://www.scirocco.org

2.  Replace your DOT lenses with Hella H4/H1 lenses.  You can get these from 
list vendors like http://www.parts4vws.com or http://www.germanautoparts.com 
depending on what coast you live on.  A set of Hella lenses should cost 
around $150.

3.  Use Cessna landing lights for the high beams.  One or two list members 
have done this.  I'm not sure how far you can see with them, but they really 
look cool!!  Cris DeLong has this on his MK1.
