Coolant Temp sensor (16V v 8V)

Are the coolant temp switches different from an 81 Scirocco to an 88
Scirocco 16V?  My rad fan happens to run now only when the guage reads
"overheat".  How do I tell if this bad boy is actually running at a proper
temp?  Presently, I am using the original instrument cluster from the 81
rocco and I've used the motor and sensor from an 88 rocco 16V.  Can the
guage be fuct?  What's up with that?
