Fuel filter sizes

What happens if my feul filter is too large:
        I replaced the filter that was on my  81 S   (supposed) 1.7L
with a filter that the books said was for the 1.7-    It was twice the
diameter as the one i was removing.
       This am, I noticed a bit of white exhaust gas. -   but good,
snappy response in the throttle.
