It sounds like you had run the motor without oil pressure or low pressure
to cause the damage. Unless of course this is a high mileage engine and
its just due for a bearing change.

2 weeks ago, my oil cooler seal went out on me on the interstate, and all my oil ended up gone. I shut it down as soon as I started hearing noise, and haven't really run it since then (replaced the cooler seal and oil pump).
The engine is out of an '84 GTi, I'm not sure how many miles are on the motor.
