[non] vw awd's

  just wondering what awd's vw made. i know audi has the quattro, but
i'm looking specifically for vw make. i know there was the synchro (what
probs did it have?) and now the 4motion. also, anyone have info on the
differences between an awd and a 2wd car (porsche comes to mind) meaning
cornering, acceleration, etc.?
